The Daily Grind joins expressive illustrations and a lively original script with unexpected comedic shifts to captivate the viewer, inviting one to learn more about how society’s coffee consumption can impact the planet. The project’s simple, hand-drawn illustration style balances the animated personality of the narrator while also communicating to the audience that making sustainable changes to our everyday routine does not have to be an elaborate undertaking. It can be as simple as putting a small pot of coffee on the stove or placing used grounds in a garden or flower pot. Throughout the project, the illustrations also wiggle to tie in the rhythm of the classic Italian music backing the video. The project also utilizes a warm color palette and an earthy texture to keep the visuals on theme and evocative of coffee itself. The visuals and audio are also supported by the typeface Battleslab, an expressive slab serif whose curves are reminiscent of the artful swirl of coffee as it is poured into a mug. With its moments of comedy, welcoming illustration style, and relatable subject matter, The Daily Grind not only sheds light on the data surrounding coffee’s impact on the planet, but also connects the audience to the cause, hoping to inspire all to be more conscious of the environmental impact of our everyday lives.
