It's no secret that the 2020 pandemic presented, and continues to present, difficult times for people around the world. From unexpected unemployment to online education, to fear of the virus, to an overwhelming sense of isolation, COVID-19 has affected the lives of just about all of humanity. While we have gotten better at coping with the effects of the pandemic, the scars it will leave on our lives will be present for years to come. For many, myself included, the pandemic continues to shine a light on the importance of being attentive to one's mental health. Dark thoughts and fears of the unknown cannot be kept locked inside, they must be expressed, whether it be talking to a friend, going for a walk, or creatively. This project is comprised of an experimental typography poster series inspired by three songs that have remained close to me during this time, "Enter Sandman," by Metallica, "Fear Inoculum," by Tool, and "Radio/Video" by System of a Down. The goal of this project was to take select lyrics from each song and visually interpret the emotions I felt when listening by way of typography. Given the context of the pandemic, the posters not only reflect each song, but also this moment in time – a time when the future may feel especially bleak, a time that feels drawn out, a time that feels strange. Through the distortion of type, constant fluctuations in perspective, and experimentation with color, each poster expresses the direct relationship between music and emotion, making feelings visually tangible to confront, and overcome painful experiences.
