System of a Down (SOAD) is an Armenian-American heavy metal band formed in Glendale, CA in 1994. Despite not releasing an album since 2005, SOAD has remained a prominent powerhouse in the rock and metal music world. This can largely be attributed to respect earned by its timeless discography and extremely loyal fan base. What makes SOAD the most unique, however, is its ability to redefine the metal genre. Thrashing guitars and deafening screams are intertwined with anything from Jazz to Mediterranean music in such a way that can only be described as simply System of a Down. This project involves designing a campaign to promote SOAD’s upcoming tour, A Bullet Called Life. The project will not only visually promote the band, but will also embrace the connection between music and its audience, taking into consideration the difficulties presented by 2020. The final concept for SOAD’s A Bullet Called Life tour revolves around the creation of an alternate universe, one that is inhabited by large-eyed, quirky creatures of the day and night, but nevertheless parallels our own as reflected by the sentient computer character. Building on System of A Down’s current red and black branding, the campaign features a collection of vibrant colors, which create contrast with the dark backgrounds. While visually striking, this contrast is also conceptually tied to the lively and dynamic theatricality of SOAD’s music. The custom logotype created for this campaign continues in this same vein, featuring organic, ever-changing letter forms, which add an eerie dripping sensation to each piece.
